Back to Ubuntu years

It was back to 2005, the year when I first tried Linux. I can still recall the name of the release:Gentoo.

That was sweet and slow 18 months, with a bunch of dude guys and lovely girls, in a place I am still dreaming about paying another visit. That’s a peaceful place with idealistic moments. What I want to mention today, is not the school, or the city, or the country, but the things we did there. The technical things we did there.

Studying was busy and all around security, programming and ideas. Besides, those lovely dudes taught me how to use varieties of releases of Linux and thus I discovered the beauty of it. How simple it is and how intuitive it is. But most important of all, I, the first time of my life, got to know that one really can live WITHOUT windows.

One can finish thesis using LaTex instead of Office. One can securely remote connect to school using ssh command instead of GUI clients. One can enjoy mp3 music, of course with a little bit extra encoding work, using MPlayer instead of WMP. It was even out of my envy that my dudes could have the stunning OS X installed on their "little black", although with a lot of hard work and with no sound, no video acceleration…but that’s where the fantasy is!

When I left them, the dudes, leaving all these lovely days behind, I forgot everything about these stuffs. I removed my Ubuntu 6. I use the Lotus Notes every day and the ThunderBird flew away. Now I finally had a "little black" of my own but totally forget about the OS X issue. I even forget how to spell LaTex but kept the BOC’s serial id of Office as my great precious. I installed the latest MSN but left the little Gaim in no where.

When at work, no one cares about Linux. They all don’t know about the cute name Ubuntu, not to mention Debian, Gentoo or the resource-consuming SUSE. Neither did I. I even forgot the name of the black ground box where commands are inputted. Yes, terminal.

So, I’ve decided to get back to Ubuntu, to recall those years and continue them. I’ll have Ubuntu installed on my T61 in recent future, yes, AGAIN! And I’ll start playing around with them, to make things more elegant and elite instead of being jailed by the 10 years’ old Windows.

Non-windows stuff, I’m coming back!
